TheMbiraisoriginallyafolkinstrumentfromAfrica.Sometimescalleda
ThumbPiano,Sanza,orKalimba,theyaregenerallyhome-madeandconsistof
severalmetaltinesattachedtoagourdorpieceofwood,whicharethenplucked
withthethumbs.Theyaremostlysmall,withahandfulofnotes.

ArrayInstruments,aU.S.companystartedbyBillWesleyandPatrickHadley,
havetakentheconceptofthisancientAfricanidiophonetoawholenewlevel,
notonlyintermsofinstrumentdesignbutalsoinpurityofsound,andrange
ofpitch.TheArrayMbiraisnotoy,it’sahighlyadvancedmusicalinstrument
builttoexactingspeci?cations.

Adifferentnotesystem
AllArrayinstrumentsaredesignedwithauniquenotearrangement,inventedby
BillWesleytofacilitateplayingharmonically.Whereasachromatickeyboard
placesharmonicnotesatsomedistancefromeachother,theArraysystemplaces
themostharmonicnotesbesideoneanother.



Thisalsomeansthatalloctavesofasinglenotearebesideoneanother,allowing
foroctave“strumming”ordoubling,whichwouldbemuchmoredif?cultona
chromaticnotelayout.TheSoniccoutureMbirainstrumentisofcoursechromatically
mapped,butweincludeaKSPStrummerscripttoemulatethisaspectofthereal
